TEACHING ENGLISH FOR YOUNG LEARNERS (EYL) By Ali M. Syuryanto and Rika apriani Graduate students of State University of Malang, Indonesia Introduction There has been a new wave to teach English for young learners (EYL) since 1990s. In Indonesia, the wave of giving English at young ages has been implemented since 1994 curriculum for 4 th -6 th graders. Even some schools have given it from first grade or since kindergarten as local content (Fahrurrozy, 2010: 35). It has been believed by some linguists, which is supported by both scientific and anecdotal evidence that characterize best age of acquisition of second language at early age or before puberty (Dulay, et.al, 1982:45-95). In addition, Patkowski hypothesized that regardless accent, those who had begun learning their second language before puberty could ever achieve full, native-like mastery of that language (Lighbown and Spada, 1999:61, Cameron, 2001:13). As teacher, sometimes there are times that it is hard to mobilize students' activeness. When they are not ready, we get the problem how to start teaching. Actually, there are many things to mobilize them before teaching our students. Follow some of simple things below: ANIMAL NAMES Procedures: First:, divide your students into several groups of three, four or two. Second, timing. Manage the rules in terms of minutes (2 or 3 minutes only). Third, classify what kinds of animals should be mentioned for example mammals, carnivores, etc. Fourth,if there are more than two group you make some rounds. Ask two groups compete in front of the class and the winner will compete for the next round. Make another round and get the winner. Each winner of a round compete for the final winner. Fifth, this is the most interesting one, give them a gift or present. Well, it might be small thing, but at least they can be motivated. Sixth. Be a fair one. Being a teacher is just like an entertainer. This profession needs something so the presence of the teacher could attract the audience/people that are students. There are several aspects that could help teachers to do their jobs better. It's possibly that what I am going to write is not scientifically proven but the way we dress in front of the classroom influences the students attraction. Have you ever thought you have ever felt desperate in teaching because the students didn't pay much attention to you. It could be caused by the way to dress up in front of them. Look, we come to school from Monday to Friday or Saturday at the same style, in formal way. On Monday we wear green uniform, because it is our uniform on Monday, "Waskat" uniform on the next two days, Tuesday and Wednesday, on Thursday we wear batik or special costumes designs, and for Friday we wear sports uniform.
